English

The mental consciousness is not located in the inner sense faculties, nor in outer sense objects like form. Neither is it to be found somewhere in between these two poles of experience. It is not found within the torso, or in the body’s outer limbs; neither can it be found elsewhere, apart from the items just mentioned. Whatever is body is not mind. The mind does not mingle and merge with the body, but neither does it have any existence apart from the body. Because, therefore, it is without the slightest existence in itself, “beings are, by their very nature, beyond the reach of suffering.”98This corresponds to the first of the two kinds of nirvana distinguished in the commentary to stanza 15. See Kunzang Pelden, Nectar of Manjushri’s Speech, 326.
