Those who affirm the existence of the self object that if, as the Madhyamikas say, the self does not exist, this contradicts the assertion that causal actions of good and evil are unmistakenly linked with their resultant experiences of happiness and suffering. For if there is no possible passage of the self, or agent of an action, into future lives, there is nothing that might experience the results of such an action. Since the aggregates arise and cease moment by moment, and the agent ceases and disintegrates the instant after the action is accomplished, it is impossible for such an agent to be affected by the maturation of the action. And since no maturation is experienced, and since it is impossible for the result of one person’s actions to ripen upon another, by whom will the karmic result be experienced?
