have a consciousness that is isolated and alone, unqualified by any object. It would be like having the reflection of an object without there being an object. The conceptual distinguisher of a knowledge object, which eliminates all that is dissimilar to it, is what we call a “generality,” a “universal.” This is the unsurpassed way of our Buddhist schools for presenting the conventional level and is what is being indirectly referred to here.84This is a reference to the epistemological theory of apoha devised by Buddhist thinkers to explain the recognition and knowledge of objects and classes of objects without appealing to a belief in real universals. For a useful overview, see Dunne, “Key Features.” For a detailed exposition, see Dreyfus, Recognizing Reality, 127–98.
