The example that the Sāṁkhyas give is invalid. When one says that a man is both father and son, one is merely attaching labels to him on the basis of two distinct relationships. He is not really a father and a son in an ultimate sense and by nature. If by nature he is truly existent as a father, there is no possibility of his being a son because, in that case, his being a father necessarily takes precedence over his being a son. Conversely, if by nature he is truly existent as a son, it is impossible for him to become a father since, in that case, his condition of being a son cannot precede his state of being a father.82In the first case, he can only ever be a father and can never be a son. In the second case, he will only ever be a son. Forever fixed in the state of sonship, he can never (as in the ordinary run of things) be a son first and then become a father. Consequently, this is simply a matter of labeling. As such, we have certainly no intention of refuting it, and in any case, it does not prove what the Sāṁkhyas want it to prove.
