Moreover, if the Sāṁkhyas say that something that is not conscious of an object is still conscious, the absurd consequence would follow that even a stick can be aware of sound and so on. For it can still be conscious even without being conscious of anything! However, when there is no object present, there is certainly no consciousness that is conscious of it. Consciousness depends on whatever objects it is conscious of. A consciousness that is not a consciousness of something is impossible. Therefore, given that, in the absence of an object such as sound, there is no cause for a corresponding sound-consciousness, how could the latter occur? It cannot. Likewise, since the conscious subjects of sound moments are themselves also distinct, a consciousness that persists into a second moment is impossible.81A consciousness arises only in relation to a specific object. Consciousnesses and their objects are, moreover, equally subject to the law of subtle impermanence. They are both momentary. Therefore, an instant of consciousness, the cognizing subject of the corresponding instant in the object, can be aware neither of the object of the preceding instant nor of the object of the subsequent instant. In terms of the theory of momentariness, therefore, the sustained experience of things extended in space and time—as well as of a variety of things (the subject of the following stanzas)—is unintelligible.
