If a sound-perceiving consciousness were permanent, sound would be perceived constantly—for the Sāṁkhyas believe that consciousness, in any given moment of audition, is permanent. They reply to this objection by saying that the fact that consciousness does not perceive sound all the time is not due to its being impermanent. It means only that it does not always have sound as its present object. But if there is no object of cognition (in this case sound), what is the (sound-perceiving) consciousness aware of? What reason can there be for claiming that the consciousness knows this or that object?
