The Sāṁkhya school accounts for all objects of knowledge in terms of twenty-five principles. The self, according to their theory, is the puruṣa, which is conscious. It is not the creator of the flux of manifestation but is the “consumer” or “experiencer” of it. The self is considered to be a real, eternal entity; it is separate from the three guṇas, or universal constituents, and is inactive. interface in which the outer and inner merge. Through the power of that which experiences the object (puruṣa) there arises “pride,” ahaṁkāra, the sense of self. Of this there are three kinds, corresponding to the guṇas: one that is subject to modification (rajasika-ahaṁkāra); one that is light and vigorous (sattvika-ahamkāra); and one that is dark (tamasika-ahaṁkāra).78See Padhi and Padhi, Indian Philosophy, 202; Hiriyanna, Essentials of Indian Philosophy, 108–13; Radhakrishnan, Indian Philosophy, 2:262–77; Larson, Classical Sāmkhya, 185; and Mipham, Teaching to Delight, 226.
