When, however, a bright lamp is set up in the dark house, shedding light on all sides, and when one is certain that what one had taken for a snake is but a rope, then one can tell oneself: “There is no snake here; I mistook the rope for one.” And when one has seen that there is indeed no snake, the belief that there was a snake is itself definitively put to rest. In the same way, if this hesitant questioning is supplanted by the firm conviction that the self that is grasped at as a personal identity within the five aggregates is nothing but a mere imputation, and if one continually accustoms oneself to this, one will see clearly that there is no self.
