But though one’s hand encounters no snake, the belief that the snake is there is still not dispelled and one’s mind is filled with a deep dread. In the same way, one can ask whether one’s head is the self, whether one’s hand is the self, and so on; and having understood that they are not, one can proceed to examine one’s entire body. But though no self is found, the failure to ascertain the nonexistence of the self shows that one’s examination has still not hit the mark. |
