Yet those who are without defilement Still behold the influence of karma.64Through a failure to negotiate adequately the ambiguities of the Tibetan text, the beginning of stanza 45 is mistakenly rendered in the Padmakara translation of Shāntideva’s The Way of the Bodhisattva. The translators had taken the first two lines of the stanza (nyon mongs spangs pas grol na de’i / de ma thag tu der ’gyur ro) as two parts of a single statement. It becomes clear, however, though only on the basis of the commentary, that, with the exception of the last syllable, the first line is to be understood as a statement of the Shrāvakas’ position, followed by a consequential rejoinder from Shāntideva. So instead of "You say there’s liberation in the instant that defilements are entirely forsaken” (which, textually speaking, remains a possible rendering), one should understand: "If through removal of defilement you are freed, your freedom should occur at once.” |
