If one considers the matter carefully, it will be understood that the absence of a personal self and the absence of a phenomenal self are both emptinesses of something that is dependently imputed. They have the same taste, and there is absolutely no difference between them. Therefore, the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do indeed possess a realization of the phenomenal no-self, or emptiness. This is established on the basis of factual evidence. For if they were without such a realization, they would be unable to overcome the defilements. One has to understand that the realization of the emptiness (the lack of intrinsic being) of the person achieved by the Shrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats is just one instance of the phenomenal no-self, the emptiness of phenomena. On the other hand, it is altogether inappropriate to think that the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the emptiness of all objects of knowledge such as the aggregates.56That is, the partless particles of which the aggregates are composed, according to the Hīnayāna tenet systems. This is a reference to one of Tsongkhapa’s eight difficult points of the Prāsaṅgika system, according to which the Arhats are said to have a full realization of emptiness on a par with that of the Bodhisattvas. This position, which Mipham strenuously rejects, will be discussed in the sequel.
