| English | The Shrāvakas, however, claim that the difference between the personal and the phenomenal no-self is very great. They say too that the realization of the phenomenal no-self, or emptiness, is unnecessary. For liberation is attained merely through the realization of the personal no-self. This however is just their opinion. They want to say that what exists is not empty, whereas the self, which has never existed, is completely unreal like a rabbit’s horns.55The comparison being made here is between the personal self, which is a fabrication, and the aggregates which, even though they are also fabrications (in that they are themselves composite and impermanent), are nevertheless collections of partless particles, which the Vaibhāṣika and Sautrāntika tenet systems consider to be ultimately real. Therefore the realization of the emptiness of the personal self implies, to a certain degree, an understanding of the no-self of phenomena, even if this does not extend to the realization of the emptiness of the partless particles. Therefore, despite their claim, the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do have a partial realization of the phenomenal no-self, or emptiness. And so they argue, saying that they have no use for a belief in the phenomenal no-self, without realizing that that is precisely what the dependently imputed personal self is. |
