| English | Therefore, failing to assimilate completely that the "I” is empty in being no more than a label attached to the aggregates, one may well reject a permanent, one, and independent self that is the owner or controller of the aggregates, which themselves exist. But this will not eliminate one’s subtle clinging to the self.53The point here is that in order to be liberated from samsara, it is necessary to remove the belief in, and clinging to, the personal self. This is not just the "gross” rejection of a self that is supposedly one and permanent and the owner of the aggregates. It is necessary to understand, more subtly, that the aggregates, the basis for the illusion of the personal self, are themselves insubstantial; they are mistaken reifications imputed upon collections of many parts. It is only when one no longer clings to the aggregates as individual realities that grasping at the personal self is completely undermined and liberation from samsara occurs. This, according to Mipham and the Indian commentators, is what the Hīnayāna Arhats certainly achieve. Nevertheless, however lofty the realization of the Arhats may be, it is still marred by a residual clinging to conceptuality, corresponding to the fact that the partless particles of which the aggregates are composed are left unexamined and unrefuted. This results in the cognitive obscuration that prevents access to perfect enlightenment, the omniscience of buddhahood. Therefore, although the Hīnayāna Arhats are indeed liberated from samsara, their spiritual evolution is not complete. After resting for many aeons in the absorption of cessation, they are, according to the Prajñāpāramitā scriptures, eventually roused by the Buddhas, at which point they enter the Great Vehicle and complete their path to omniscience. Therefore, until one understands that the self is empty and does not exist inherently, no matter how much the permanent self is rejected, to the extent that there is clinging to the reality of the aggregates of one’s continuum, clinging to "I” will not be overturned. As it is said in the Ratnāvalī, |
