English

But to say that a flame illuminates itself is just a figure of speech; it is not actually true. For since in a flame there is nothing obscured by darkness, what is there for the flame to illuminate? If the flame is an illuminator even when there is nothing to illuminate, it follows that it could illuminate even the sun and moon—and this is not what the Chittamatrins believe. Moreover, if it is possible for a flame to act on itself in this way, it would follow that darkness obscures itself as well. And the consequence of this is that the darkness, which prevents things like pots from being seen, obscures itself so that the darkness disappears and the pots remain visible!
