English	When fishers, butchers, farmers, and the like, Intending just to gain their livelihood, Will suffer all the miseries of heat and cold, Why, for beings’ happiness, should those like me not bear the same? Fishermen, butchers, and workers on the land, in order just to scratch a living, go without rest the whole day long, and at night they do not sleep. The stones are stained by their bleeding feet, the trees by the blood of their hands. They must patiently ignore all the discomforts of cold and heat, the wind and the rain. This being so, says Shantideva, why should he shrink from the hardships encountered on the path, in his wish to bring beings to happiness in the immediate term and then to the ultimate great bliss of buddhahood? Of course, he must shoulder all such hardships.

Bodhisattva - A person who seeks enlightenment for the sake of others. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a compassionate being who is training on the path to buddhahood and aspires to eliminate the suffering of all beings and take all sentient beings to the state of enlightenment.
