English

When one battles against enemies in the hope of victory, one ignores all the horrible sufferings that one knows are in store, the wounds of arrows, of swords and spears, and so on. And until one accomplishes one’s aims (the destruction of one’s opponent), one must stand one’s ground refusing to give way.

No need to say that I will not lose heart,

Regardless of the hardships of the fray. From this day forth I’ll strive to crush

These foes whose very nature is to bring me pain.

This being so, Shantideva tells himself that he too must fight and vanquish his afflictive emotions, those enemies for whom it is as natural to hurt him in this and future lives—unprovoked and with terrible pain—as it is for fire to be hot. These are the natural enemies of us all, high or low. Whenever they appear, they labor for our destruction, and it is essential to make the greatest effort to destroy them.
