English	[Regarding the propagation of the teachings in Tibet] a division is made between the earlier and the new translations. The early translation period of the Nyingma tradition occurred under the aegis of the three religious kings, Songtsen Gampo, Trisongde-tsen, and the sovereign Tri Ralpachen, who were themselves the manifestations of the noble lords of the three lineages. Boston: Shambhala Publications, 2010.It was then that the sutras and tantras together with their commentaries were rendered into Tibetan by a series of translators from Thönmi Sambhota until the omniscient Rongdzom Dharma-bhadra, under the guidance of the panditas Lha Rigpa’i Senge down to the great master Smritijnana. Subsequently, certain tantras and their commentaries, and some of the shorter sutras, were translated by Rinchen Zangpo and others, and these belong to the Sarma or new translation period. All these translated teachings are the precious Doctrine of our compassionate Teacher, the Buddha Shakyamuni. Moreover, all the holy upholders of the Buddhadharma possess the view marked by the four seals, on account of which it is impossible to discriminate between them with regard to their activities of the three secrets, which are as indistinguishable as space within the expanse of the dharmakaya. Therefore it behooves us to approach them all in a manner free from faction and sectarian bias.

Bodhisattva - A person who seeks enlightenment for the sake of others. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a compassionate being who is training on the path to buddhahood and aspires to eliminate the suffering of all beings and take all sentient beings to the state of enlightenment. Tantra - Tantra, when juxtaposed with Sūtra, generally refers to the scriptures and texts which discuss esoteric topics. While the term is used to refer to texts on other topics, it is mostly used to refer to the genre of scriptures and texts on themes and topics associated with Vajrayāna Buddhism. Sarma - The new Buddhist schools which began to rise in the second millennium in Tibet after Buddhism declined in the ninth century as a result of the fall of the Yarlung dynasty. The Sarma schools were mostly based on Buddhist teachings freshly received from India and Nepal in contrast to the revival of the old teachings which already existed in Tibet. Tib གསར་མ།
