My faith will thus be strengthened for a little while,

That I might grow accustomed to this virtuous way. But others who now chance upon my words

May profit also, equal to myself in fortune.

Given that it is sufficient to understand the present subject for oneself, why, one might ask, is it necessary to compose a text? Shantideva says that, by such means, the strength of his vivid, yearning, and confident faith52For a discussion of fourfold faith, see Treasury, p. 124. in the activities of the Bodhisattvas will intensify for a little while, so that he can meditate upon and cultivate virtue, namely, the thought of bodhichitta and the six paramitas. For it is through continuous meditation and cultivation that bodhichitta is intensified. It is thus that Shantideva stirs up a joyful and enthusiastic attitude in his own regard.

Bodhisattva - A person who seeks enlightenment for the sake of others. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a compassionate being who is training on the path to buddhahood and aspires to eliminate the suffering of all beings and take all sentient beings to the state of enlightenment. Pāramitā - The six or ten types of practices which lead an individual to Buddhahood. The practice of perfections is particularly important in Mahāyāna Buddhism in which the entire path of the Bodhisattva to reach full enlightenment is included in the six or ten perfections. The six perfections are that of giving, of discipline, patience, zeal, meditation, and wisdom.
