English	Those whom arrogance destroys Are thus defiled; they lack self-confidence. Those who have true confidence escape the foe, While others fall into the power of an evil pride. We may well wonder why it is taught here that we should cultivate this sense of pride and self-worth when pride is something that we had been told to abandon at an earlier stage. Indeed beings in the three worlds who are ruined by their pride and arrogance are defiled and miserable creatures. They are in fact completely devoid of the self-confidence that Bodhisattvas have in respect of their abilities. To be sure, if they had this kind of self-confidence, which is an antidote, they would not fall beneath the power of their enemy: the kind of pride that is an affliction.
