English	"I will be victor over all, And nothing shall prevail and bring me down!” The offspring of the Lion, the Conqueror, Should constantly abide in this self-confidence.92Here, and in the following verses, a distinction is drawn between two kinds of pride. On the one hand, there is the positive quality of confidence leading to courage and perseverance and, on the other, the negative quality of arrogance and conceit, resulting in the overweening behavior that is often the mask of weakness and self-doubt. Using the same term in both senses, Shāntideva plays on the word ‟pride” in a way that might at first be confusing. For the sake of clarity in the translation, the two kinds of pride are more pointedly distinguished. And so, he says, he will be the victor over all the defilements of the three worlds. Against him, no afflictions shall prevail. For he is the offspring of the Conqueror, the Lion among men, who has gained the victory over the four demons and has acquired the power of the four fearlessnesses. He will therefore maintain a self-assured confidence in his ability, thanks to which no defiled emotion will be able to get the better of him.

Āvaraṇa - Literally, that which obscures or conceals. Bodhisattva - A person who seeks enlightenment for the sake of others.
