If it could, then it would follow that everyone would be a Madhyamika from the very beginning.22To say that phenomena are no more than mental imputations implies that one has already come to the conclusion that they are empty of real existence. The Prāsaṅgikas take as the relative the unexamined phenomena experienced by worldly and unphilosophical people, whereas the notion that phenomena are just mental imputations can occur only to those who understand that things are not what they seem and do not exist in the way that they appear. Such an idea does not automatically occur to untutored reflection. If it did, it would occur even to ordinary and uneducated people, and consequently we would all be Madhyamikas from the start! |
