assertion of all the masters of both the Prāsaṅgika and the Svātantrika schools; and it is a great mistake to say that it is the exclusive position of the Prāsaṅgikas. For, when [the Svātantrikas and the Prāsaṅgikas] analyze phenomena with reasoning that aims to establish their ultimate status, nothing is able to withstand analysis, and phenomena are accordingly established as mere cognitive imputations.5In other words, the Svātantrikas and Prāsaṅgikas are distinguished according to their interpretation of the conventional truth. When establishing the ultimate truth, they proceed in the same way. Note that, according to Mipham, the statement that phenomena are the imputations of thought belongs to the kind of discourse that aims at establishing the ultimate, not the conventional, truth.
