Drakar Tulku begins his exposition with the identification of the object of negation. He says that “those of our own school who propound phenomenal existence2Mipham has slightly modified Drakar’s text. The latter originally wrote “the Svātantrikas, of our own [Madhyamaka] school . . .” Mipham’s change of wording (substituting dngos po smra ba for rang rgyud pa) is presumaby intended to underline the defining characteristic of the Svāntantrikas that is of relevance here, namely, the fact that, in the Gelugpa account, they display a subtle clinging to true existence, thereby advocating a view that is inferior to that of the Prāsaṅgikas. say that phenomena—instead of being posited simply as they appear to undamaged minds—are established according to their mode of being. They say, in other words, that they exist truly and that the mind that apprehends them and clings to them is the innate clinging to true existence.” By contrast, according to his own school, that of the Prāsaṅgikas, all phenomena are imputed through cognitive activity, or posited through its power. So, in accordance with the quotation he supplies—“By the power of cognition, the worlds have been imputed” and so on3Here Mipham has abbreviated Drakar’s text and has changed the order in which the quotation from the sutra is presented. The text cited here is the final line of a quatrain taken from the Questions of Upali (Nye bar ’khor gyis zhus pa), and which is cited in full in Drakar’s text. See p. 297.—Drakar Tulku says that “when something is not just imputed through cognitive activity but is established from its own side, it is said to be truly existent, and the mind that clings to it is referred to as the innate clinging to true existence.” Our opponent says this and other things.
