And if, by birth and lineage of human kind,

I’m able to distinguish good from ill And do not leave aside the Bodhisattva deeds,

Why should I not attain the state of Buddhahood?

If we and those like us, who have attained the best of all the six kinds of existence, who have the faculty and understanding of speech and are able to distinguish good from bad—if we cultivate bodhichitta without succumbing to despondency, if we do not relinquish the practice of the Bodhisattvas, why ever should we not be able to gain enlightenment? Surely we will achieve it! For it is said that even those who have been in-constant in their cultivation of bodhichitta will attain enlightenment.

Bodhisattva - A person who seeks enlightenment for the sake of others. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a compassionate being who is training on the path to buddhahood and aspires to eliminate the suffering of all beings and take all sentient beings to the state of enlightenment.
