Description

The Four Sublime States: Contemplations on Love, Compassion, Sympathetic Joy and Equanimity by Nyanaponika Thera, published by the Buddhist Publication Society (The Wheel No. 6, 1993), is a short Theravāda treatise presenting the four brahmavihāras—mettā, karuṇā, muditā, and upekkhā—as both ethical principles and objects of meditative development. After an introduction explaining their nature as boundless states leading to jhāna and ultimately to liberating insight, Nyanaponika offers lyrical contemplative passages on each of the four, concluding with a sustained analysis of how they mutually support and balance one another, with equanimity described as the crown and culminating factor that gives the other three stability, direction, and unshakable grounding in insight into karma and no-self.
