Vostochnaya Literatura (Восточная литература, "Oriental Literature") is a Russian academic publishing house of the Russian Academy of Sciences, specializing in Oriental and African studies. It was founded by decision of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences as the publishing center of the Institute of Oriental Studies in 1957, initially under the name "Publishing House of Oriental Literature." In 1964 it was absorbed into the publishing house "Nauka" as a division, the Chief Editorial Office of Oriental Literature (GRVL), functioning under that structure until 1992, when it was reconstituted as the independent publishing firm "Vostochnaya Literatura." Over the course of its existence, the press has issued around 8,000 titles.
The firm publishes across the full range of Oriental and African studies—history, ethnography, archaeology, economics, demography, sociology, cultural studies, philosophy, psychology, law, literature, and linguistics—and has released hundreds of titles in major academic book series, including Pamyatniki pis'mennosti Vostoka ("Written Monuments of the East," published as Pamyatniki literatury narodov Vostoka / "Literary Monuments of the Peoples of the East" from 1959–65), Kul'tura narodov Vostoka ("Culture of the Peoples of the East"), Yazyki narodov Azii i Afriki ("Languages of the Peoples of Asia and Africa"), and others—several of which have carried critical editions and translations of Sanskrit, Tibetan, and other Asian-language sources.
