The Orientalist Institute of Louvain is a research centre dedicated to the study of oriental languages and civilisations. Its aim is to identify, analyse and compare, using an appropriate critical method (philological, historical, anthropological), the ideas, beliefs, practices and cultural expressions of different oriental peoples, in their original foundations, their pre-modern evolution and their encounter with other cultures. For each oriental tradition concerned, it focuses on highlighting the continuities and diachronic transformations, as well as the areal phenomena of exchanges and diffusions.
The CIOL gives pride of place to the study of original or unpublished textual sources, of which only critical editing, precise translation and rigorous contextual interpretation can provide a solid basis for contemporary questions concerning issues of cultural identity and intercultural or religious dialogue.
