Similar to the Westfälische Wilhelms-University (1919) in Münster, the Ugarit publishing house is a very young company that was founded on July 13, 1988 by Prof. Dr. Manfried Dietrich and Prof. Dr. Oswald Loretz as a civil law partnership for the purpose of publishing academic books. The first series was ALASP(M) = “Treatises on the Literature of Ancient Syria and Palestine (and Mesopotamia)”, and in the same year, 1988, the series UBL = “Ugaritic-Biblical Literature” was added. In 1992, the series AVO = “Antiquities of the Near East” was founded, and after the death of Prof. Dr. Alfred Rupp took over the publications MARG = “Reports on Anthropology and the History of Religion” and FARG = “Research on Anthropology and the History of Religion”, as well as the yearbook of the publisher “Homo et Religio”, Saarbrücken. In 1997, the editors took over the series AOAT = “Ancient Orient and Old Testament” and the yearbook UF = “Ugarit Research” from the publishers Butzon & Bercker, Kevelaer, and Neukirchener, Neukirchen-Vluyn, and integrated these publications into the Ugarit publishing house’s offering. Due to the growing range, it was necessary to employ an editor and additional assistants.
In order to ensure that the publisher’s offerings were distributed in a customer-oriented manner, distribution was outsourced to the company Sigloch Distribution, Blaufelden, Germany. The publisher Eisenbrauns Inc., Warsaw, IN, USA, was brought in to improve marketing in the USA and Canada.
On July 2, 2012, almost exactly 24 years after the publishing house was founded, the Ugarit-Verlag GbR of Prof. Dr. Thomas R. Kämmerer and will now work together with Prof. Dr. Manfried Dietrich as Ugarit-Verlag – Buch- und Medienhandel GmbH continued. (
