Description

Benefits of Saving Lives (tshe thar phan yon) is a short verse text by Chatral Sangye Dorje written at the request of a Doctor Dordrak. It makes the case for the practice of life release (tshe thar)—saving animals from slaughter or mortal danger—as a legitimate and meritorious practice grounded in all three levels of Buddhist vow: the basic vehicle's avoidance of harm, the Mahāyāna bodhisattva training in compassion, and the Vajrayāna samaya of the ratna family. The text argues that since no conditioned virtue brings greater merit than saving life, life release is the most effective practice for longevity, the removal of obstacles, and the accumulation of merit for both the living and deceased. It gives specific practical guidance—protecting migratory birds, prohibiting hunting and fishing, and encouraging officials and monastics to use their influence to promote life release in their communities. The colophon identifies it as a spontaneous composition. The text is in volume 3 of Chatral Rinpoche's Collected Works.
