English

The bodhicitta of intention, of aspiration, has two aspects: compassion, which is directed toward beings, and wisdom, which is directed toward enlightenment. Neither aspect by itself, either the mere wish to benefit beings, or the mere wish to attain enlightenment, expresses bodhicitta. On the one hand, if you do not aim at attaining ultimate enlightenment, then however strong your wish to benefit beings may be you will never go beyond ordinary kindness and compassion. On the other hand, if you wish to attain enlightenment for you own sake alone, you will never go beyond the limited nirvana of Hinayana practitioners. Both aspects are indispensable. This is expressed in the Ornament of True Realization:
