In order to realize temporary and ultimate happiness, you first need to arouse the motivation of the bodhicitta, the mind set on attaining enlightenment for the sake of all beings, which is rooted in compassion. You must then combine means and wisdom: the practice of the paramitas, the transcendent perfections, with the realization of emptiness. As Nagarjuna says in the Ratnamala:
