By pursuing four divine qualities bodhisattvas become non-returners with respect to (attaining) the qualities of a Buddha. By what four? By those that embrace limitless saṃsāra! (Otherwise) everything beginning with honoring and revering the limitless Buddhas would be contradicted. Moreover, it is illogical to say that the (bodhisattvas’) course of conduct should be undertaken only by those of dull faculties, but not by those with sharp faculties. For the bodhisattvas’ course of conduct, of giving and the other perfections, arises beginning with the first stage (and continues) all the way up to their finishing the tenth stage. For it is declared:

चतुर्भिर् ब्रह्मधर्मैः समन्वागता बोधिसत्त्वा अवैवर्त्तिका भवन्ति बुद्धधर्मेषु। कतमैश् चतुर्भिः। अपरिमितसंसारपरिग्रहेण। अपरिमितबुद्धोपस्थानपूजयेत्यादि सर्वं विरुध्येत। नापि मृद्विन्द्रियेणैव चर्या कर्तव्या न तु तीक्ष्णेन्द्रियेणेति युक्तं वक्तुम्। यतः प्रथमां भूमिम् उपादाय यावद् दशमीभूमिप्रतिष्ठितानां बोधिसत्त्वानां दानादिचर्या उत्पद्यते।
