If the self and the aggregates were intrinsically the same, it is said that there would be three problems; it would absurdly follow that (1) the self would be many, and so forth; (2) it would be reasonable for the undetermined questions to be answered;372On the Buddha’s silence on fourteen “undetermined questions,” mentioned in the Middle Length Discourses (Majjhima Nikāya), see Siderits, Buddhism as Philosophy, 70–72. and (3) seeing the nonexistence of the aggregates would be the meaning of realizing selflessness. Within the first, there are five root arguments; it is said that there would be problems such that it would absurdly follow that: the self would be many, the self would substantially exist, the apprehension of self would be undistorted, the self would be annihilated upon the attainment of nirvana without remainder, and the self would arise and cease prior to the attainment of nirvana without remainder.
