If these two were intrinsically the same, then there is the problem that it would absurdly follow that the self would also be subject to arising and ceasing as the aggregates are subject to arising and ceasing. Moreover, even though there is no problem in being subject to arising and ceasing merely conventionally, if it were intrinsically established to be subject to arising and ceasing, then selves in past and future lives would be intrinsically distinct. Thereby, they would necessarily be other, unrelated objects. If this were the case, it is said that there would be three problems; it would absurdly follow that (1) it would not be possible to remember past lives; (2) actions performed would perish; and (3) the effects of what one had not done would be encountered.
