| English | When the scriptures teach dependent arising, they say, “Based on the condition of birth, there is aging and death.” Regarding death here, disintegration should be understood as the sentient being that died. That disintegration is said to be produced by birth, which is its condition. This shows that disintegration has a cause. Also, the Sūtra on the Ten Grounds says: “Dying also has two functions: it brings about the destruction of a conditioned phenomenon and it also acts as the cause for the uninterrupted continuity of ignorance.”353Sūtra on the Ten Grounds, 146b. It says that dying directly produces death, and dying functions to produce a subsequent ignorance. This shows that disintegration is an effect. Therefore, a phenomenon that is produced by a cause and can produce an effect should be asserted as an entity. For this reason, the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way says: “Entities and [767] non-entities are conditioned phenomena . . .”354Nāgārjuna, Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way, XXV.13d. It says that both entities like sprouts, as well as the disintegration of a sprout that is the sprout’s non-entity, are both entities. The latter sprout’s disintegration is an entity because the sprout’s entity is conditioned by causes and conditions, and because the disintegration of that sprout arises based on the sprout’s entity. |
