For example, a colorful rope is thought to be a snake as a consequence of having a similar shape and form as a snake, and the conditions of it not being clear and so on. When this happens, the snake in the rope is merely a conceptual designation. From the side of the colorful rope itself (rang ngos nas), there is no snake. This is because there is no basis of characteristics for a snake that is apprehended at all in the collection of the parts, shape, and color of the colorful rope. Other than those parts as well, there is no basis of characteristics for such an apprehended snake. Likewise, when a person is designated upon the aggregates, there occurs the thought “I” or “person.” When this happens, the person is designated in dependence on the aggregates; it does not exist objectively (rang ngos nas) other than being a mere conceptual designation. This is because there is no basis of characteristics for a person to be apprehended in each of the aggregates, in the collection, in the continuity, or in the parts; and it is not apprehended apart from the aggregates, either.
