We reply that this is not a problem because the Mahāyāna engages the sūtras by teaching the four truths, it appears in the disciplining (‘dul ba) of the afflictions, and it does not conflict with dependent arising. There are many discrepancies within your Disciple scriptures, so there are many instances where there is no mutual engagement among the sūtras. Since the Mahāyāna is profound and vast, it may not engage with some of the Disciple sūtras, but it [735] does engage with the sūtras of the Mahāyāna itself. Also, it appears in the 700 trainings of the bodhisattvas and does not conflict with the basic nature due to teaching emptiness. Even though the compilers of the Disciple’s canon did not include it, it was included by the likes of Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Mañjughoṣa, and Vajrapāni (gsang bdag). Also, there appear many presentations of Mahāyāna grounds and paths in texts included in the eighteen schools, such as the “Vast Foundation” (sde snod kyi gzhi chen po) of the Mahāsaṃghikas, the Vaipulya texts of schools such as the Pūrvaśailas, and the Twelve Thousand of the Aparaśailas (’jigs med ri bo’i sde snod khri nyis stong pa). Therefore, it is not the case that the Mahāyāna is not the Buddha’s Word.[p.142]The Profound Reality of Interdependence
