are differences in terms of how they ascertain it and the way they meditate on it. In the Hīnayāna, they ascertain reality with brief arguments, and then meditate on it; they do not have an expansive understanding of reality. In the Mahāyāna, as is stated in the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way, there are limitless arguments that establish the lack of true existence with respect to each basis of analysis. An expansive understanding of reality occurs through meditating on this. For this reason, in the Hīnayāna one does not meditate on anything other than just antidotes to afflictive obscurations, while in the Mahāyāna, one needs to cultivate an extremely broad understanding that expands wisdom into reality in order to eliminate cognitive obscurations.
