| English | Seven scriptures are known to invalidate the assertion that sublime Disciples and Self-Realized Ones do not realize the subtle selflessness of phenomena. The first [732] of these scriptures are the three stanzas beginning with “As long as the aggregates are apprehended . . .”259Nāgārjuna, Precious Garland, v. 35. The second is the nine stanzas beginning with “In the way that from a confusion of the eyes . . .”260Nāgārjuna, Precious Garland, vv. 357–365. The third is “The Mahāyāna teaches non-arising . . .”261Nāgārjuna, Precious Garland, v. 386. The fourth is “Forms are like a mass of foam . . .”262Connected Discourses (Saṃyutta Nikāya), III.22; English trans. in Bhikkhu Bodhi, Connected Discourses of the Buddha, 952–953. The fifth is “The Blessed One, knowing entities and non-entities . . .”263Nāgārjuna, Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way, XV.7. The sixth is “Those who wish to train in the stage of the Disciples also . . .”264Perfection of Wisdom in One Hundred Thousand Stanzas, 460a. The seventh is from the Condensed Perfection of Wisdom: “Whoever wants to be a Tathāgata . . .”265Condensed Perfection of Wisdom, 191b. These have been mentioned above. Candrakīrti cites the first five passages in his commentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way. He cites the last two, as well as the Sūtra on the Fist of Concentration and the Sūtra Teaching the Stable Superior Intention, in Clear Words. |
