English

The opponent argues about the baseless, saying, “What is unreal, distortions like cyclic existence, must have a real basis of distortion, a real root or basis—as in the case when a log is confused for a person: there is a real log.” In response, it is said: “How is it not possible?” The meaning here is that it is possible for distortion to arise even without a real basis of distortion—as in the case of confusing an unreal log for a person. All phenomena are said to be emptiness, so how is a tree trunk established as real? All phenomena are rootless because there is no truly existent root. This reason is also established by the sūtra passage: “This is also spoken in the noble Vimalakīrti Sūtra.”
