The way the opponents have understood self-awareness based on the previously described analysis is not reasonable. This is because scriptures that refute self-awareness, such as the Inquiry of Ratnacūda (Ratnacūdasūtra) and the Descent to Laṅka, have established that it does not exist. When investigated with reason, too, when objective and subjective representations are made, it is dualistic. Yet when it is held that what is cognized is not at all different from the cognizer, it is impossible for cognition to discern itself, no matter how clear it is, by way of the dissolution of dualistic appearances. For example, no matter how sharp a knife is, it cannot cut itself. No matter how long a finger is, it cannot point to itself. No matter how physically fit a person is, she cannot climb on her own shoulders. No matter how hot a fire is, it cannot burn itself. The cognized and the cognizer, the cut and the cutter, and the touched and the toucher are not established as separate. While not separate, if something were to intrinsically act upon itself, then it would absurdly follow that all agents, actions, and patients would become a singularity. This problem is described in the autocommentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way. In the root text it says:
