The text to be explained here specifically is the Wisdom Chapter of the Way of the Bodhisattva. Its author is the Victor’s child, Śāntideva, the great upholder of the chariot tradition of the sublime way. He lived shortly after the glorious Candrakīrti, and the qualities of his magnificent body bore the mark of being sustained by Mañjuśrī for several generations. In this life, he renounced his kingdom and took ordination from the preceptor of Nālandā, Jayadeva. He understood the entirety of the corpus of scriptures by hearing them from Mañjughoṣa and the preceptor himself. His life story is famously recounted in seven miraculous episodes:
