| English | In this Prāsaṅgika tradition that does not accept the intrinsic existence of anything, even conventionally, the basic consciousness is not accepted. This is because causal relationships are completely reasonable even without accepting anything like a basic consciousness. One might wonder if this conflicts with the statements about the basic consciousness in the Descent to Laṅka, the Densely Arrayed, and the Sūtra Explaining the Intent. There is no conflict because in these sūtras, and others that teach the aggregates as truly existent and the existence of a self of persons, as in “Monks, the five aggregates are the burden, and the person is the bearer of this burden”;176Connected Discourses (Saṃyutta Nikāya), III.22; English trans. in Bhikkhu Bodhi, Connected Discourses of the Buddha, 952–953. there is a basis in another intention. They are provisional in meaning with a purpose for teaching. The Introduction to the Middle Way says: |
