The “only” in the statement from the Sūtra on the Ten Grounds that “the three realms are mind only”155Sūtra on the Ten Grounds, 145b. is not a negation of external objects. Rather, it shows that the three realms are produced by karma, as in the statement: “The various worlds arise from karma.”156This passage is cited in Sthiramati, The Meaning of Reality: An Extensive Commentary on the “Treasury of Metaphysics” (Abhidharmakoṣabhāṣyaṭīkātattvārtha, D. 4421), 97b. Since karma is determined within the twofold intention (sems pa) and intended (bsam pa), the three realms are created by mind. Therefore, in order to negate another creator that is different from mind, like Īśvara, the word “only” is used. This Sūtra on the Ten Grounds itself establishes this, saying that the twelve links depend on the mind:
