| English | What follows is a brief explanation of how this tradition identifies the extremes of superimposition and denigration and how it relinquishes them. The imagined natures do not ultimately exist, nor exist on their own; superimposition is to apprehend them as if they did. The conceived object here is the extreme of superimposition. The Bodhisattva Grounds (Bodhisattvabhūmi) states: “It is a manifest conception having superimposed what does not have its own characteristics—phenomena like forms and the designated words for entities like forms.”150Asaṅga, Bodhisattva Grounds (Bodhisattvabhūmi, D. 4037), 25b; English trans. in Engle, Bodhisattva’s Path to Unsurpassed Enlightenment, 77. Both the dependent and consummate natures ultimately exist and exist on their own; denigration is to apprehend them as nonexistent. The conceived object here is the extreme of denigration.
