| English | The essence of the consummate nature is the reality that is empty of the two selves superimposed by the twofold apprehension of self. Etymologically, it is the “consummate nature” because it is unchanging; it is the consummate observation [702] of the pure path; and it is the supreme of all virtuous phenomena. When divided, it is divided into two: the consummate nature in terms of the selflessness of persons and the consummate nature in terms of the selflessness of phenomena. Further, there are many divisions, such as the twenty emptinesses. Also, there is the twofold division of (1) the undistorted consummate nature (phyin ci ma log pa’i yongs grub), like the gnosis of a sublime being’s meditative equipoise; and (2) the unchanging consummate nature (’gyur med yongs grub), like the basic nature. The former is merely presented as a division of the consummate nature, but is not the genuine consummate nature. To give an example, it is said to be like space. As space is the mere negation of obstructive contact, and pervades everywhere, the consummate nature likewise is a non-implicative negation that is the mere exclusion of the object of negation and pervades everything. These are explained in the way of the scriptures of the Sūtra Explaining the Intent and the Compendium of Mahāyāna; I fear too many words, so do not cite them here.149See Tibetan edition and English translation of the Sūtra Explaining the Intent in Powers, Wisdom of the Buddha, 81–89, 129–135; Asaṅga, Compendium of Mahāyāna, chap. 3. |
