| English | The essence of the dependent nature is an entity arising in dependence on its causes and conditions. Etymologically, it is the “dependent nature” because it arises due the power of other causes and conditions, and having arisen, does not have its own power to remain more than an instant. When divided, it is divided into the pure and impure dependent nature (dag ma dag gi gzhan dbang). The first is, for instance, the gnosis of a sublime being’s meditative equipoise and the pure major and minor marks. The second is, for instance, the impure world of the environment, the contaminated aggregates, and the causes of these: karma and afflictions. To give an example, it is like an illusion: when a pebble and stick are influenced by a mantra, they appear like a horse and an ox while not existing that way. Likewise, the dependent nature does not exist as a duality of an apprehended and apprehender that are distant and cut off, yet it appears that way due to the force of the imagination of the unreal (yang dag pa ma yin pa’i kun rtog). |
