| English | The essence of the imagined nature is the aspect of superimposition of various linguistic concepts or nominal signs upon any phenomenon. Etymologically, it is the “imagined nature” because it is merely imputed by nominal signs, without having any of the characteristics on its own as they are imputed. There is a twofold division of the imagined nature in terms of the way it is superimposed: based on the superimposition of essence or quality. For instance, these are, respectively, like “this is form” and “this is the arising of form.” There is also a twofold division in terms of its essence: the imagined nature of completely disjointed characteristics (tshan nyid yongs chad kyi kun btags) and the imagined nature of categories (rnam grangs pa’i kun btags). The first refers to what is totally nonexistent, like the twofold self. The second refers to unconditioned phenomena of the conventional, which are the bases of essences and qualities appearing to exist on their own despite not existing that way. An example of the imagined nature is stated in the Sūtra Explaining the Intent: it is like a space-flower.148Sūtra Explaining the Intent, 27a; English trans. in Powers, Wisdom of the Buddha, 101. That is an example of something that is a mere conceptual designation, but is not an example for what is impossible as an object of knowledge.[p.98]The Profound Reality of Interdependence |
