This is explained as follows: Phenomena such as forms are the dependent nature. Their intrinsic existence is the imagined nature. Their emptiness of intrinsic existence is the consummate nature. This framework for the three natures is reasonable because, for instance, a multicolored rope that is the basis of designation is posited as the dependent nature; the snake designated with respect to that while not existing is [692] posited as the imagined nature; and the genuine reality with respect to the actual snake is posited as the consummate nature. This is stated in the autocommentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way: “The snake is designated upon the dependently arisen assemblage of the rope.”124Candrakīrti, Autocommentary on the “Introduction to the Middle Way,” 282b. And later in that text, “The viewpoint of the sūtras is explained after understanding the framework of the three natures.”125Candrakīrti, Autocommentary on the “Introduction to the Middle Way,” 238a. Based on this explanation, the chapter of Maitreya’s Inquiry in the Mother is shown to be definitive in meaning, and the chapter of Maitreya’s Inquiry in the Sūtra Explaining the Intent is shown to be provisional in meaning.
