| English | One might wonder, “Does this not conflict with statements that claim that seeing impermanence and so forth is seeing reality?” Candrakīrti said this in his commentary on Reason in Sixty Verses: “Distortion is the apprehension of things like happiness, because things with this nature do not even conventionally exist. The lack of distortion is to apprehend things like suffering because things with this nature do exist conventionally.”107Candrakīrti, Commentary on “Reason in Sixty Verses,” 7b. The meaning intended here is that objects apprehended that do not even conventionally exist, like permanent aggregates, and objects apprehended that do conventionally exist, like impermanent aggregates, can be distinguished in terms of being distorted or undistorted conventionally. Yet in terms of reality, based on things like forms not existing as either permanent or impermanent, the distinction between being distorted and undistorted cannot be made. Intending this, the Mother Sūtras say that whoever regards forms and the like as permanent or impermanent, happiness or suffering, self or no-self, empty or non-empty is coursing in signs.108For instance, The Condensed Perfection of Wisdom says: “Even if bodhisattvas conceive ‘this aggregate is empty,’ they are coursing in signs and do not have faith in the domain of the unborn.” Condensed Perfection of Wisdom, 189b–190a. |
